Russia, Latvia Sign Border Treaty
Russia and Latvia has signed a state border treaty to put an end to Riga’s territorial claims against its eastern neighbor, the RIA Novosti reported. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov and his Latvian counterpart Aigars Kalvitis put their signatures onto the document in Moscow on Tuesday.
The border agreement was drafted to be signed back in 2005. But the signing was put off because of Latvia’s move to add a declaration to the treaty, referring to the 1920 peace treaty which mentioned Abren Volost (now Russia’s Pytalovsky District of Pskov Region) as part of Latvia.
Moscow declined to close the deal with the attached declaration as it would have enabled Latvia to persist in its territorial claims on Russia’s territories.
