Tajik President Bans Cell Phones and Slavic Family Names
Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rakhmonov has prohibited registering newborn babies with surnames ending in the Slavic “–ev” and “–ov”, the Interfax news agency reported Tuesday. The president earlier said he wants to change his name to drop the Russian-style ending to become Rakhmon. All name registering agencies throughout the countries have been instructed to give only Persian variants of last names.
President Emomali Rakhmon also issued an official ban on celebrating School Leavers Day and the ABC Book Day. What is more, pupils will not be allowed to go to school by their personal cars or carry cell phones, the Tajik president’s press service said.
The Tajik leader earlier lambasted lavish weddings, school leaving days and birthdays in this poor country. On top of it, Tajiks have been offered to study history of their nation by a six-volume book about Mr. Rakhmon’s activities since 1992. The series was published last year.
After the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, many Tajiks dropped the Slavic endings which were added to their last days during the russification of the Communist era.
