Ulyanovskaya Mine Broke Safety Rules – Officials
A probe into an incident at the Ulyanovskaya mine has found serious safety breaches at the coalmine where a methane explosion killed at least 108 people last week, a governmental safety agency said on Monday.
The preliminary investigation showed “the most flagrant violations of rules one the safe use of equipment”, the Rostekhnadzor federal industrial regulator said.

The agency earlier stated that the explosion in the mine could have been triggered by draw in the pit. There were also reports that the methane gas explosion may have occurred by “a possible designing error”. Rostekhnadzor experts held an examination of the mine in February, finding no flaws, according to media reports.

Meanwhile, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office earlier said that new degassing equipment was being tested in the pit when the blast occurred. Yuzhkuzbassugol, owner of Ulyanovskaya, confirmed the information but dismissed any link between the two facts.
