Georgia Sues Russia for Human Rights Violations
Georgia is going to lodge a suit against Russia with the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg on Monday.
Tbilisi is protesting human rights violations which were abundant in a large-scale deportation of Georgian citizens from Russia late last year, Elena Tevdoradze, chair of the human rights committee at the Georgian parliament, said in an interview with the Imedi television.

The lawsuit with the Court of Justice is to be filed by Zurab Chiaberashvili, Georgia’s Ambassador to the European Union.

The Georgian parliament set up an ad hoc commission to investigate more than 5,000 cases of the Georgians deported from Russia in the heat of the Russian-Georgian conflict last year. The commission finished the probe on February 15.

Experts of the commission found that Russian authorities permitted large-scale violations of rights of Georgian citizens, persecuted people for their ethnicity. Georgian law-makers have made a statement, saying “Russia has violated not only legal norms but its own constitution as well.”
