Violence at Soviet Monument in Tallinn Suppressed
Police had to use tear-gas to suppress protests of Estonian nationalists at a monument to Soviet soldiers in the capital of Tallinn, the Ekho Moskvy radio reported Monday.
Police says tear-gas was employed after a group of aggressive Estonian nationalists tried to lay a barbed-wire wreath with the inscription “To the Murderer of the Estonian People” to the monument of the Soviet Liberator Warrior in central Tallinn.
People who were around the monument tried to defend it. One of the activists of the Soviet monument preservation group said they knew about the upcoming action. The demonstrators were standing in a chain around the monument. Police officers with dogs created the second line of defense.
Gas was employed to prevent clashes of the conflicting parties, police reports. There are currently police forces and defenders of the monument patrolling the area.
