N. Korea Wants to Transfer to Russia Funds Frozen by the U.S.
North Korea is willing to transfer to Russian banks the funds frozen in the Macao bank by decision of the United States, RIA Novosti reported citing Chun Yung-Woo, chief of North Korean negotiators at six-party talks.
Russia has been chosen as an intermediary, as unlike the banks of South Korea, Russia's banks have accounts kept by the residents of North Korea.
The negotiations on shutting down the nuclear program of North Korea could be resumed in two or three weeks, Chun Yung-Woo made clear.
By initiative of the United States, $25 million of North Korea was frozen in Macao bank. Exactly the delay in that money transfer was caught by North Korean envoys as an excuse to leave Beijing talks.
The analysts say that, even though Washington claims the transfer from Macau’s Banco Delta Asia needed to be overcome, it benefits from uncertainty to pressurize North Korea.
