Russia’s Military to Wait Longer for Service Stars
Russia’s military will serve longer to get another grade title. President Vladimir Putin inked the decree to amend Military Service Regulations, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
The changes will affect both junior command personnel and officers. A sergeant will have to serve for three years to be promoted to a senior sergeant, and a lieutenant will wait for same three years to climb to a senior lieutenant. But it will take five years for a half-colonel to become a colonel.
The root cause of extension is greater numbers of contract military and reduction in draft term to a year. So, regular soldiers won’t have enough time to get the sergeant’s promotion and all commanding posts will be held by contract military. Moreover, the result of too rapid promotion is that a person gets a grade title before amassing the required experience.
The decree will come in force January 1, 2008.
