Security Council Rejects to Extend Iran’s Ultimatum
UN Security Council veto-wielding members (P5) set to deliberations on new draft resolution on Iran’s nuclear program. To begin with, they have rejected a proposal for a 90-day suspension of UN sanctions, AFP reported.
Extending the ultimatum from 60 days to 90 days was the South African proposal. On March 23, the Security Council will focus on other amendments put forward by South Africa, Qatar and Indonesia.

South Africa, for instance, suggests imposing simultaneous moratorium on sanctions once Tehran suspends uranium enrichment and lifting embargo on exports of Iran’s armaments. The amendments of other non-permanent members are mostly declarative. Their purpose is evidently softening the text and emphasizing the effort of six negotiators.

A few of amendments advocated by non-permanent members are likely to be passed, said Russia’s envoy to UN Vitaly Churkin. But the readiness to compromise is different amid P5, so some amendments will be rejected in the end, Russia’s diplomat specified.

”In some issues, it is possible to make advance to non-permanent members to achieve unity at voting. Certainly, the matter at stake is not toughening the wording,” Churkin explained. Russia’s position is to get Security Council’s guarantee that the new sanctions won’t affect current contracts and won’t be detrimental to interests of Russia. The new draft could be agreed on by the end of this week, Churkin said.
