Ulyanovskaya Tragedy Breaks All Records
The tragedy at Ulyanovskaya mine that killed more than 100 is the deadliest since 1997 explosion at Zyryanovskaya mine, the Kemerovo Region, which death toll reached 67.
The actual reasons of Ulyanovskaya explosion haven’t been determined so far. According to Emergency Minister Sergey Shoigu, “the human factor is completely out of question,” as it is one of the most up-to-date mines of Kuznetsk Basin equipped with newest devices of gas monitoring.

“A few most probable reasons of incident are considered now. Among them are the surge of soil and possible error in design,” RBC reported referring to representatives of Russia’s technical supervising authority, Rostekhnadzor.

The methane-attributed explosion in Ulyanovskaya mine (owned by Yuzhkuzbassugol) occurred Monday, at 1:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. MSK), killing 106 of 203 present in the mine. Ninety three were rescued and the hunt for others continues.
