Karl Bushby, Dimitri Kieffer to Attempt to Cross Russia Again
Karl Bushby of Britain and American Dimitri Kieffer that were detained in April 2006 when attempting to cross Russia’s state border in Chukotka, are back in Russia to continue the travel from South America to Europe.
For travelers, all documents required to arrive in Russia were executed in early March, representatives of Chukotka’s authorities told Interfax Monday. “The papers of Kieffer and Bushby drew particular attention because of past year’s incident,” spokesman of the authorities specified.

On April 1, 2006, frontier guards of Russia detained Kieffer and Bushby for illegal crossing of border. The travelers had Russia’s visas in their passports, but there were no marks about the actual crossing.

Kieffer and Bushby said they planned to pass the customs in Providenie (Providence) village, but failed to reach it because of bad weather. So, they ended up in the town of Uellen, where they were ultimately detained.

This March, the travelers intend to resume the trip from the place of past April interruption. They will walk from Uellen to Anadyr via Egvekinot and then to Magadan via Markovo. This stage of the expedition will complete in early summer.

For former paratrooper Karl Bushby, 37, the footstep journey began in 1999, once he headed from South America to his native Hull of Great Britain. He walked roughly 28,000km by April 2006. Dimitri Kieffer joined him just for one of the stages.
