Merkel Calls For Open Discussion with Russia
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for open discussion with Russia concerning stationing elements of the U.S. missile defense system in Eastern Europe, AP reported.
Merkel said the U.S. plans for air defense system will be one of the highlights of her negotiations in Poland slated for March 16. According to German chancellor, she will make clear in Poland that they are for settling this issue within NATO and for open discussion with Russia.

The United States is willing to station ten interceptors in Poland and have a radar in nearby Czechia. Washington says the aim is to protect Europe from possible missile attacks by some rogue nations, for instance, Iran.

On February 24, Poland officially agreed to initiate air defense talks with the United States.

Of interest is that not all Europe has hailed the U.S. plans to extend its air defense into the Old World. France President Jacques Chirac is particularly critical when it comes to respective intention of Washington. But Chirac said he won’t run for presidency any longer and the legacy of his tenure, including the world authority of France, is strongly criticized in his own country.
