Russia Hails Demolition of Cyprus Wall
Russia has welcomed the demolition of a wall that has partitioned the Greek south and the Turkish north of Cyprus’ capital of Nicosia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
Moscow views the decision as a move towards overcoming the long-standing climate of distrust between the two communities, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman told reporters on Friday. This action should renew talks aimed to secure a viable and comprehensive solution for the Cyprus issue which is possible on the basis of UN Security Council resolution, Mr. Kamynin noted.

Greek Cypriots on Friday demolished the wall in the heart of Nicosia’s tourist area, which has long partitioned the Greek south and a Turkish north. The wall has been monitored by Greek and Turkish Cypriots as well as UN peacekeepers since the cease-fire in 1974. A bulldozer dismantled the wall in an unannounced move, which the country’s president said was planned two weeks before.

The island of Cyprus has been divided into a Greek Cypriot south and Turkish Cypriot north since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member while citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus live outside the EU. The northern part of the island is also under international embargo.
