PricewaterhouseCoopers Clears Tax Dues
PricewaterhouseCoopers has fully cleared its tax debts though the company’s activities are still under investigation, RIA Novosti reported Friday. The accounting and consulting firm says that after losing its case in a court of arbitration it will contest the decision at the Russian Supreme Court of Arbitration.
PricewaterhouseCoopers’s Russian office had to pay more than 290 million rubles in tax arrears to comply with the court decision, the company said Friday. PricewaterhouseCoopers was investigated for 243 million rubles tax fraud. The company was requested to pay extra 47 million in fines.
Police officers searched the Moscow office of PwC on Friday, announcing that the company’s executives are under criminal investigation for tax evasion. Officials also underscored that PwC was the auditor for the bankrupt oil giant YUKOS between 2002 and 2004, releasing false accounts on the company’s activities and financial state.
The Federal Tax Service demanded last December that these audit contracts for 2002-2004 be invalidated and PwC pay $480,000. The suit from tax authorities against YUKOS’ auditor is pending at the Moscow Court of Arbitration.
PricewaterhouseCoopers said Friday it provides investigators and police with all relevant information.
