Iran Hopes to Get Russia’s Nuclear Fuel in March
Iran expects deliveries of Russia’s nuclear fuel to begin in March, RIA Novosti reported referring to Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani.
Russia will deliver nuclear fuel for Bushehr plant in line with the contract, Larijani said.
But the hopes of Iranian official for timely supplies of nuclear fuel from Russia could be too optimistic. Not long ago, Moscow blamed the arrears of contractual payments on Iran. On March 5, Russia forwarded another notification to Iran, specifying the 21-day delay in payments under the contract, said a source with the nuclear energy industry of Russia. A delegation of Iran’s officials arrives in Moscow today, March 7, to discuss the terms to go on with construction of the nuclear plant.
The contract for constructing the first power-generating unit of Bushehr plant was signed in Tehran January 8, 1995. Then, Russia undertook to supply a VVER-1000 unit, nuclear fuel for it and train Iranian experts to operate the delivered equipment. As agreed, Russia is to launch the first unit in September 2007 and set into motion the power unit in November. The fuel is to be supplied half a year before the actual launch.
