Russia’s Researchers to Develop Vaccine for Wild Birds
Russia’s researchers set to developing the H5N1 vaccine for wild birds, said Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Control Service of Russia, Rosselkhoznadzor, ITAR-TASS reported.
The researchers are developing special vaccine for wild birds against the H5N1 strain of the flu, Nikolay Vlasov, chief of the veterinary control department at Rosselkhoznadzor, said at today’s news conference.
“The work has just begun,” Vlasov said, specifying that the matter at stake is creating a model product of gene and protein engineering.
It will be an oral vaccine that the birds will consume together with special feed. Vaccinating 30 percent to 40 percent of the wild birds would stop the virus, the official assured. The core facility to develop the vaccine is the Animal Protection Research Institute, according to Vlasov.
