Yanukovich Urged U.S. Not to Divide Europe
The United States should have discussed with Ukraine and Russia the plans of stationing its missile defense system in Poland and Czechia, Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich told German Handelsblatt.
The decision should have been taken only after the wide deliberations in Europe, Yanukovich said. Otherwise, Europe may again rise to the verge of the split, as it was in case of the war in Iraq.
Europe shouldn’t reject or corner Russia, as it is the strong state, Yanukovich said, specifying that Ukraine would be developing partner’s strategic relations with the eastern neighbor.
The U.S. plans to station the missile defense elements in Poland and Czechia outraged Russia. President Vladimir Putin, for instance, vowed to give an asymmetrical response to this initiative of the United States.
A group of the U.S. military experts will arrive in Kiev early March for the missile defense consultations, Ukraine’s Acting Foreign Minister Vladimir Ogryzko announced February 16.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko committed the government and the National Security Council to study the U.S. plans for stationing elements of its missile defense system in Poland and Czechia, Alexander Chaly, deputy chief of Ukrainian president’s office, said February 21.
