Japan Wants to Enrich Uranium in Russia
Japan is considering the possibility of enriching uranium on Russian territory, Chairman of Japan’s Association of Electric Energy Companies Tsunehisa Kazumata said in Tokyo.
According to Russian business newspaper Vzglyad, Japan is considering Russia among other candidates for the enrichment of uranium produced by processing nuclear waste in atomic power stations.
Kazumata said there has been no specific negotiations between the company and Russia.
Tokyo has repeatedly said recently that nuclear waste might be processed in Russian facilities. Japanese Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Takao Kitabata said on Thursday that Tokyo plans to raise the issue during the upcoming visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov to Japan on February 27-28.
There are 54 working nuclear reactors in Japan now. Spent nuclear fuel is processed in Great Britain and France.
