IAEA Head Summoned to North Korea
Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohammed El Baradei said that North Korea had invited him to Pyongyang for holding consultations on ‘improving relations’ and ‘implementing the agreement to suspend the work of nuclear enterprises’, reported the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
El Baradei’s visit to North Korea is expected in the second week of March, after the parties coordinate the agenda for the upcoming talks.

IAEA head said he hopes that his visit to Pyongyang will help to return North Korea to the IAEA, which the country left in January 2003.

If El Baradei goes to North Korea, it will be his first visit there as head of the IAEA.

On February 13, Pyongyang agreed to stop its nuclear developments in exchange for economic aid from China, the U.S., Russia, Japan, and South Korea. It is likely that it will be the IAEA who will control the implementation of North Korea’s obligations.
