UN Chief Hopes NKorea Nuclear Deal Will Send Good Message to Iran
The UN chief said Thursday a North Korean nuclear disarmament deal earlier this month was a “great step forward”, and hoped it would send a positive message to Iran, the Associated Press news agency reported.
“North Korea has committed to dismantle eventually all nuclear weapons and nuclear facilities and materials,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told reporters in Vienna.
The statement came a few hours after the IAEA presented a report on Iran. The UN nuclear watchdog says Teheran did not suspend uranium enrichment as demanded by The UN Security Council’s resolution by February 21. Iran’s defiance clears the way for further sanctions from the Security Council.
North Korea agreed on January 13 to shut down its main nuclear reactor in a breakthrough deal on nuclear disarmament. In return, South Korea, China, the United States and Russia promised to send 50,000 metric tons of black oil to Pyongyang or provide adequate economic aid.
