Iran Fails to Meet UN Nuke Deadline
Iran has failed to comply with a UN Security Council demand to halt uranium enrichment, the IAEA said Thursday, the AFP news agency reported.
The UN Security Council imposed limited sanctions on Iran in a December 23 resolution demanding that Teheran suspend enrichment works within two months. Iran is suspected of producing nuclear fuel for an atom bomb.
Iran declined to comply with the demand, contending that its nuclear program is aimed for peaceful civilian purposes.
In a report written by IAEA chief Mohamed El Baradei, the UN agency said Iran is holding uranium enrichment in Natanz, in central Iran, where four cascaded with 164 centrifuges have been installed underground. The UN nuclear watchdog added, though, that Iran is enriching uranium in small amounts and at a level below the needed to make weapons.
The IAEA says the information was up-to-day on February 17.
The UN Security Council resolution was passed on December 23 with Russia opposing stronger sanctions.
