Estonia Strikes Its Largest Military Deal
Estonia has decided to buy a short-range air-defense missile system worth $64 million in what will be the country’s largest single weapons purchase since independence in 1991, the AFP news agency reported on Thursday.
The Estonian government said Thursday it would acquire a ground-to-air anti-aircraft system from French missile maker MBDA and Swedish Saab. The system consists of weapons, communications, and radars, and equipped with an infra-red homing guidance system.
The air defense system will be used to “protect infantry brigades from air attacks domestically as well as on NATO’s foreign missions”, the Estonian defense ministry said in a statement. The complexes can be integrated in a short-range air-defense system.
Man-portable anti-aircraft missile complexes and small-bore artillery are the backbone of Estonia’s air defense shield. This Baltic nation earlier bought a Mistral very-short-range anti-aircraft system developed in the early 1980s.
