Kyrgyz Sailor to Lodge $490,000 Suit to Spain
Viktor Gavrishev of Kyrgyzstan is willing to go to law against Spain’s La Gomera Island, which police prevented him from rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, the AKIpress news agency reported.
The suit will amount to around $490,000. All money, Gavrishev said, will go to the orphan homes in Kyrgyzstan.
The Kyrgyz rower planned to follow the Christopher Columbus route via the Atlantic Ocean, from La Gomera of the Canary Archipelagos to the Antigua of the Antilles Archipelagos. He thought the voyage would take 67 days to 70 days if he was rowing 12 hours to 13 hours a day.
The beginning of the voyage was slated for mid.-December. But the motor boats of La Gomera police forced Gavrishev’s Sunny Wind to sail to the shore straight after the start, claiming the rower had no permit for taking the ocean.
He had all necessary documents with him, Gavrishev assured blaming the failure on some firm competing with the Ocean Rowing Society that was to coordinate his travel by boat.
Now the sportsman is going to address Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev and the Foreign Ministry of Kyrgyzstan in hope they will ensure fair trial of his case in foreign courts.
