Parliaments of Russia and Iran Agreed to Boost Cooperation
The parliaments of Russia and Iran have agreed to boost cooperation, said Ilias Umakhanov, first deputy chairman of the Federation Council Foreign Committee, RIA Novosti reported.
The first and the main thing we have agreed upon is to make contacts active to the maximum extent, said Umakhanov, who heads Russia’s team for cooperating with Iranian parliament, Majilis. “The coordination will be effected within the framework of two houses of the Federal Assembly with a cooperating team of the Majilis of the Islamic Republic,” Umakhanov said.

The legislators of Russia and Iran also went through the regional contacts of the countries, Umakhanov said. This cooperation could be split into two portions. The first one provides for cooperation of the Caspian regions of Russia – Astrakhan, Kalmykia, Dagestan, while the second one specifies the active economic cooperation with Moscow, the Moscow Region, Tatarstan.

The Federation Council delegation headed by Foreign Committee chief Mikhail Margelov was in Tehran February 19 to 21. Russia’s legislators met Majilis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and a number of other senior officials of Iran. Among other things, the parties deliberated on the nuclear problem of Iran.
