Russia’s Army Is Battle-Worth, Most Russians Believe
Russia’s Army will defend the country if the foreign states attempt to attack, said 67 percent of respondents that took part in the February poll of Russia’s Public Opinion Center.
Of interest is that this certitude was shared by just 60 percent in July of 2005. The number of those skeptical about the battle-worth nature of the armed forces slid from 33 percent to 27 percent over the period.

Asked about the recruiting, 46 percent spoke for mandatory military duty, and 47 percent would like to shift to the contract. In 1998, the contract recruiting was backed up by 55 percent, while 35 percent stood for mandatory service, but the ratio changed to 39 percent vs. 52 percent respectively in 2005.

The contract military service is generally favored by people below 35 years old, while the senior generation (older than 60) advocate mandatory military obligation.

Asked about the general unwillingness of the youth to do military service, 70 percent attributed it to vicious hazing of young soldiers by the older ones and by officers.

The survey was held February 10-11, covering 1,579 in 153 settlements of 46 regions of Russia. The statistical error doesn’t exceed 3.4 percent.
