Bush is Concerned by the Situation with Freedom of Word in Russia
June 10, A special attention was paid to the situation with the freedom of speech in the Russian media during the meeting of Vladimir Putin and George Bush in the framework of G8 summit, Reuters reports US Presidential Administration top official as saying.
“While talking with Mr. Putin, President Bush particularly stressed that the free press had always been vital for development of democracy,” the agency’s source noted. Mr. Bush told Mr. Putin that if one did not always like what they were saying, or even if they complicated one’s life, the press was still an essential element to make the government efficient.
At the same time, the agency notes, “the two leaders discussed neither the situation with YUKOS ex-head Mikhail Khodorkovsky, nor the situation in Chechnya.”
