Moscow to Mark Transgene-Free Food
Starting from July 1, Moscow introduces the voluntary marking of transgene-free food, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the city’s government.
The marking option for transgene-free food is specified in the ruling on additional actions to ensure food quality and safety in Moscow that Mayor Yury Luzhkov has sealed already.
The “No Transgene!” label will be annually provided by the Consumer Market Department of the city following the inspection of respective product. It will be given free of charge, according to RIA Novosti.
To check the product for no transgene, Moscow intends to buy out special laboratory equipment, spending for this purpose 50 million rubles from the budget. Though marking the transgene food won’t be a mandatory requirement, Moscow authorities have promised to reveal all producers of such food and warn the population about them.
