Tennis Star Sharapova Donates $100,000 to Chernobyl Recovery Projects
Tennis Star Maria Sharapova of Russia was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the UN headquarters in New York. During the ceremony, Sharapova announced a $100,000 donation to the UNDP Chernobyl recovery projects.
Top-ranked women tennis player, Maria Sharapova sealed a contract with UNDP setting forth the annual remuneration of $1. At the same time, Sharapova donated $100,000 to Chernobyl recovery projects in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
When speaking about the highlights of her public activities in the UNDP, Sharapova promised to endeavor to help regions still suffering from the aftereffects of Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986.
Sharapova is willing to fund the projects implemented in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The donated money, Sharapova said, would go to establish a computer center for children in one of the affected regions and to create sports facilities there.
Past year, the tennis star set up the Maria Sharapova Foundation that provides money to regions suffering from the nuclear tragedy of Chernobyl. As a Goodwill Ambassador, Sharapova will promote the healthy life-style, being an example of person able to independently answer for destiny and achieve a lot in the life.
