Iran Open for Nuclear Talks
Iran is opposed to any proliferation of mass destruction weapons and nuclear weapons, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said when interviewed by the U.S. TV network ABC. Today's standing of Ahmadinejad is to insist that Iran’s rights should be safeguarded, assuring at the same time that Iran needs no conflict with the United States.
Though tensions between Iran and the United States are running high, the military officials of the latter have continuously denied any plans to attack Iran.
The openness rhetoric of Ahmadinejad was probably the response to demands of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei. Resuming nuclear negotiations with Iran would require the absolute transparency of its activities, ElBaradei said.
On February 9, IAEA announced termination of over a half of the projects of engineering assistance to Iran. The reasons of limited sanctions could be Tehran’s refusal to halt uranium enrichment and the abrupt denial of Iran’s negotiators headed by Ali Larijani to attend the scheduled meeting with ElBaradei in Vienna.
It is worth mentioning that when commenting on the conflict of Israel and Palestine, Ahmadinejad called for a referendum among Palestinians on their future, emphasizing that exactly that nation should decide whether or not to consider Israel a sovereign state.
