Russia, China Remain Key Problem Countries, IIPA Said
“Russia and China are again this year the two countries that are of the greatest concern to the copyright industries, as they were in 2006” the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) announced via its web-site.
Moreover, unlike China where the copyright protection has somewhat improved, the situation has further aggravated in Russia vs. the previous year. So, IIPA’s recommendation is to keep Russia on the Priority Watch List and review its status later in the year. “Russia’s copyright privacy problem remains one of the most serious in the world. Piracy rates for some sectors are estimated at over 70 percent in 2006,” IIPA said.
Apart from Russia and China, the other leaders in copyright violation are Argentina, Canada, Egypt, Thailand and India.
IIPA's Special 301 review of copyright sets forth 60 countries with the piracy problems, which caused to music producers the overall damage of $15.25 billion in 2006 vs. $15.83 billion a year earlier.
IIPA unites over 1,900 companies dealing with music/movie/software production, including Microsoft, Apple, Cisco Systems, Time Warner and Twentieth Century Fox.
