Attorneys of Death-Sentenced Urge Russia to Help
Another mate of Saddam Hussein, Iraq’s former vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan was sentenced to death and, under the laws of Iraq, is to be executed no later than in 30 days after reading the verdict. Ramadan was first condemned to the life in prison but the Court of Appeal returned the case for another consideration.
The attorneys of Taha Yassin Ramadan will appeal to the Court of Cassation, of course, but the chances are slim. Given that the Court of Cassation promptly overruled the appeals to Saddam Hussein’s verdicts and to verdicts of his two mates, it would hardly help this time as well, according to Egyptian lawyer Mohammed Munib, who leads the international team of attorneys defending former chiefs of Iraq.
In view of the above, the attorney called on the world community to urgently step in and staked on Russia to extend a helping hand. Munib also specified that the time has come for the Arab world to pressurize, end this comedy and stop the bloodshed.
But the final decision will be taken directly by the U.S. President George Bush, Munib said. According to the attorney, Bush appears to be willing to wipe out all former leaders of Iraq.
The verdict against Taha Yassin Ramadan is the fourth death sentence passed against former chiefs of Iraq. Saddam Hussein, Awad Hamed al-Bander and Barzan Ibrahim Al-Tikriti faced the death sentences November 5, 2006.
