AvtoVAZ in Talks with Renault-Nissan
Top management of Russia’s automobile giant, AvtoVAZ is negotiating with Renault-Nissan alliance about producing the cars on facilities in Tolyatti, AvtoVAZ Vice President Maxim Nagaitsev said at Autoinvest 2007 Conference, Interfax reported.
The parties are still elaborating details of the joint project, Nagaitsev said. It is yet unclear in which of the shops and on what terms AvtoVAZ will produce Renaults. The Russians are ready to provide both the shop making Lada Nivas and a portion of facilities used to produce Kalinas.
The venture with another partner of AvtoVAZ, General Motors, is developing successfully, but Tolyatti plant may accommodate a few more assembly facilities capable of producing from 30,000 to 100,000 cars a year, Nagaitsev pointed out.
“Such negotiations are underway, for instance, with Renault-Nissan,” top manager said, pointing out AvtoVAZ is working to improve Kalina’s platform, which could be further used to create new models, including the low-cost cars and the four-wheel drive ones.
AvtoVAZ would like to retain R&D and assembly of components and power units, Nagaitsev specified.
