N. Korea to Dismantle Nuclear Reactor in Yongbyon in Return for Greater Help-Out
At the six-party nuclear talks on North Korea that are currently underway in Beijing, Pyongyang has yielded to dismantle its nuclear reactor in Yongbyon in return for the greater energy aid vs. the size requested previously, a source close to negotiations told the Interfax news agency on condition of anonymity.
”North Korean delegation agreed for dismantling instead of freezing its nuclear reactor provided the previously requested economic assistance is stepped up,” the source said.
North Korea that has demanded to annually provide 500,000 tons of black oil and 2 million kW of electric energy in return for freezing the reactor, says that dismantling it would require increasing the assistance up to 2 million tons of black oil and 2.25 million kW of electric energy, the source said. The size of assistance is the key hurdle en route of reaching the agreement at the third stage of the fifth round of negotiations.
Moreover, the parties haven’t come to terms so far about splitting the contribution between them. Only three states – China, the United States and South Korea - have promised to help, while Japan and Russia haven’t given the positive responses yet.
