One Cold War Is Enough, Pentagon Chief Says
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Sunday called for further cooperation with Russia, responding to President Putin’s blistering speech at the 43rd Munich Security Conference.
“We all face many common problems and challenges that must be address in partnership with other countries, including Russia,” the Associated Press news agency quoted Robert Gates as saying. “One Cold War was quite enough.”
The new U.S. defense chief spoke one day after Vladimir Putin’s blunt speech where the Russian president slammed the United States for a reckless and dangerous foreign policy. The White House expressed disappointment with the speech, calling the accusations “wrong”.
Robert Gates clearly decided to reduce tensions with Russia and Putin by deflating Saturday’s remarks and poking a bit of fun at their past careers of intelligence officers. “As an old Cold Warrior, one of yesterday’s speeches almost filled me with nostalgia for a less complex time. Almost,” Mr. Gates said on Sunday. The defense secretary announced that he has accepted Putin’s invitation to visit Russia.
Unlike the defense secretary, U.S. presidential hopeful Senator John McCain was harsh commenting Vladimir Putin’s speech which he described as “the most aggressive” from a Russian leader since the end of the Cold War.
