India to Buy 40 Su-30 Fighters in Russia
Air Force of India will buy in Russia 40 Su-30MKI fighters, Reuters reported referring to the air chiefs of India. Each plane costs $40 million, bringing the total value of the contract to $1.6 billion. The deal is expected to be clinched till March.
Additional purchase of Su-30MKI was sanctioned by the defense procurement authority of India past December, but the deal budget wasn't specified then.
Russia and India made the license assembly agreement for Su-30MKI in December of 2000. The document that expires in 2017 empowers India to produce the aircraft, including engines and electronic equipment, at the HAL facilities.
Moreover, 44 enterprises of Russia take part in the current Bangalore Air Show that is held in India. For Russia, it is another chance to clinch new deals for supplies or license assembly of the aircraft.
Some time earlier, India declared the intention to buy 126 fighters for its Air Force, promising to announce the respective tender in the near term. Quite a number of analysts call Russia the frontrunner for the contract, which budget is estimated at $10 billion.
