Bush Creates New Military Command for Africa
U.S. President George W. Bush said Tuesday he had approved the Pentagon’s plan to create a U.S. military command for Africa to deal with potential threats in the region.
The Pentagon's European, Central and Pacific commands are currently sharing the responsibility for different parts of Africa.
“The new command will enable us to have a more effective and integrated approach than the current arrangement of dividing Africa between Central Command and European Command,” Reuters quoted U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates as saying.
The decision reflects Africa’s growing strategic importance as well as concerns about Islamist militancy in parts of the continent such as Somalia and Al-Qaeda’s training facilities in Kenya and other countries.
