Dutch Prosecutors Want 10-Month Sentence for Hiddink
Dutch prosecutors on Tuesday asked for a 10-month prison sentence for the Russian soccer team coach Guus Hiddink on tax fraud charges, the AP news agency reported.
Prosecutors say the Russian national team manager evaded ˆ 1.4 million ($1.8 million) in taxes in 2002 and 2003 as he falsely claimed he was a resident of Belgium while living in Dutch Eindhoven. The Dutch national financial prosecutor’s spokesman says Mr. Hiddink did not live long enough in Belgium to pay taxes to Belgian coffers.

Vitaly Mutko, head of the Russian Football Union, says he does not believe that Guus Hiddink will soon face a prison sentence. “The Netherlands is a civilized country, and I don’t think that they will go to this kind of extremes,” he said in an interview with Reuters. “Prosecutors were the only to ask for this penalty. Let’s wait and see what judges will say.”

Guus Hiddink’s lawyers are to present evidence to counter the accusations on February 12. The verdict for the coach of the Russian soccer squad is due on February 26.
