Russia to Monitor Right Observance in the West
An organization of right advocates will emerge in Russia. It will monitor freedom of speech and observance of human rights in the West, Interfax quoted as saying Anatoly Kucherena, lawyer and member of Russia’s Public Chamber.
The attitude of western organizations of right advocates is rather biased when it comes to the right observance in Russia, according to Kucherena. “When we are criticized by the Council of Europe, it is understandable, this is done by the world organization of authority. But when some unclear movements compare us first to North Korea, then to Angola, it sounds at least cynical,” Kucherena pointed out.
The statement of Kucherena could be viewed as response to the human right report elaborated by Freedom House and released in mid.-January. The report equaled Russia to Cuba, North Korea and Libya in terms of political rights and civil liberties and gave it the lowest score in 16 years of Russia’s participation in the rating.
“The absurdity of these ratings doesn’t leave any place for comments,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry made clear.
